It's not the exact same. But the profound effect letting go of soo much has had on my life - is immeasurable. And thus far, has been truly for the better. Though I never thought that would be true as the process began. I realized, for instance, without so many possessions...how I was tied to what I had in a way I didn't even want to be; how my possessions caused me to make life choices I would never have made otherwise. Now, with less, I am making decisions I really am happy with. I am more free to travel, more free to make choices I can fully stand behind. House fire or other cause...letting go can be a very good thing (as you point out). I've been married for about a year, and even though we don't have a lot, I thought about losing our possessions, and what kind of position that would put us in.
